Every place on Earth has a distinctive 'pollen fingerprint'. Forensic palynology reads the pollen clinging to clothing, shoes, cars or bodies to prove where they have been.

What forensic palynology is

Forensic palynology is the use of pollen and spores as trace evidence in criminal and civil investigations. It aims to prove — or disprove — a link between people, objects and places. Because pollen is microscopic, sticky and almost invisible, suspects rarely think to remove it, which makes it powerful physical evidence.

Why it works

Different regions, habitats and even individual gardens carry distinctive combinations of pollen and spores. A patch of woodland, a roadside verge and a marsh each produce a different pollen assemblage. When someone walks through an area, that assemblage transfers onto shoes, clothing, hair and vehicles — and, thanks to sporopollenin, it persists. Comparing the pollen on an object with the pollen of a location can indicate whether the two have been in contact.

The core principle: a pollen assemblage is like a location's signature. If the rare, telltale grains from a specific scene appear on a suspect's clothing, that is difficult to explain by chance.

How a case works

  1. Collection — investigators recover samples from clothing, footwear, tools, vehicles, nasal passages or a body, and from control sites at the scene.
  2. Processing — the palynologist chemically concentrates the pollen and spores and mounts them on slides.
  3. Identification & counting — grains are identified to the finest possible level and counted to build an assemblage.
  4. Comparison — the questioned sample's assemblage is compared with scene and control assemblages.
  5. Reporting — the analyst writes a report and may testify, being explicit about how strong (or weak) the link is.

What it can establish

Limitations

Forensic palynology is corroborative, not usually conclusive on its own. Its value depends on good reference data for the region, careful control sampling, and honest reporting of uncertainty. It also depends on trained specialists — and there are very few. Leading practitioners such as Vaughn Bryant have long argued the technique is underused precisely because so few laboratories can perform it.
