How much do palynologists earn? A transparent look at the data
No statistics office tracks palynologists. Here are the official categories they fall into, the wage data for each, and what the numbers can and cannot tell you.
No statistics office in the world publishes a wage for “palynologists”. Palynology is a specialism, so official surveys count palynologists inside larger occupations: geoscientists, biological scientists, university teachers or forensic staff. Any single “palynologist salary” you see online is an estimate built on one of those categories.
The closest official US figures are these (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025): geoscientists earned a median of $101,920, rising to $158,590 in mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction; postsecondary biological science teachers $84,620; and earth and space science teachers $103,170. In the UK there is no official figure either. Prospects puts geoscientist starting salaries at £28,000–£35,000, and UKRI’s minimum PhD stipend rises to £21,805 from 1 October 2026.
Below we map the job to official occupation codes, show which numbers are data and which are estimates, and explain why the most-quoted figure online is really a microbiologist’s wage.

US figures are medians: half of the people in the category earn more, half less. They describe the whole occupation, not palynologists specifically, and they are in US dollars before tax.
Why there is no official “palynologist” salary
Wage surveys classify jobs with standard occupation codes. In the US that is the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC); in the UK the ONS uses its own SOC system for the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings. Neither has a code for palynology, which is a technique used across several disciplines rather than an occupation of its own.
The US codes show where palynologists are counted. SOC 19-2042, Geoscientists, explicitly “includes mineralogists, paleontologists, stratigraphers”, which covers most biostratigraphers. SOC 19-1029, Biological Scientists, All Other, lists “paleobotanist” among its examples. So an industrial palynologist is usually a geoscientist in the statistics, and a botanical one is usually a biological scientist.
The closest official categories
Geoscientists (energy, biostratigraphy): SOC 19-2042
This is the best proxy for palynologists working in oil and gas, mining or geological surveys. The BLS reports a median annual wage of $101,920 in May 2025; the lowest 10% earned less than $59,330 and the top 10% more than $200,230. By industry, the median was $158,590 in mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction, $119,430 in the federal government, $93,600 in consulting, $90,820 in state government and $83,190 in architectural and engineering services (BLS).
The BLS projects 5% employment growth for geoscientists from 2025 to 2035, from about 25,400 jobs. Biostratigraphy is a small slice of that total, so treat the growth figure as context, not a forecast for palynology. For what this work involves day to day, see palynology in oil and gas exploration.
Biological scientists and botanists
Botanically trained palynologists in research institutes, herbaria or botanic gardens fall under “Biological scientists, all other” (SOC 19-1029). The Occupational Outlook Handbook has no profile page for this catch-all group, so there is no headline median to quote with confidence. The nearest profiled biology occupations sit in the high-$80,000s (microbiologists: $87,990), but those are neighbours, not matches.
Postsecondary teachers (academia)
Many palynologists are lecturers or professors who also run a lab. The BLS gives a median of $85,330 for all postsecondary teachers in May 2025, with $84,620 for biological science teachers and $103,170 for atmospheric, earth, marine and space sciences teachers. The BLS notes that postsecondary teachers typically need a PhD, although community colleges may hire with a master’s (BLS).
Forensic science technicians (SOC 19-4092): why it is only a weak proxy
Crime-lab technicians had a median of $72,060 in May 2025, with the bottom 10% under $48,250 and the top 10% above $117,250 (BLS). The category covers people who collect and analyse physical evidence in general. Forensic palynology is a small specialist niche, and people doing it are not necessarily employed as crime-lab technicians. Use this figure only as a floor-level reference for lab-based forensic roles.
UK: ONS earnings data and Prospects profiles
The ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings is the official UK source. For context, median gross annual earnings for full-time employees were £39,039 in April 2025 (ONS). ASHE publishes earnings by occupation, but again there is no palynology code.
The Prospects geoscientist profile, a careers resource rather than an official statistic, gives starting salaries of “£28,000 to £35,000” and senior salaries of £45,000 to £55,000. It does not cite a data source, so treat it as an indicative range (Prospects).
What drives pay up or down
The official data point to four factors that matter more than the job title itself:
- Sector. Within the same geoscientist category, the median in mining and oil and gas ($158,590) is almost twice that in architectural and engineering services ($83,190). Industrial biostratigraphy pays best on paper, but hiring there can rise and fall with exploration budgets.
- Degree level. The BLS says geoscientists typically enter with a bachelor’s degree, while postsecondary teachers typically need a PhD. In palynology, research and expert-witness roles usually expect a doctorate; lab technician roles often do not (see the realistic route into palynology).
- Contract type. Early academic careers often run through fixed-term PhD and postdoctoral contracts, which set the income floor for several years (next section).
- Location. All figures above are national medians. Pay varies by state, region and cost of living; UKRI, for instance, adds a London weighting to its stipend.
PhD and postdoc funding
Most palynologists pass through a PhD, so the stipend is the first “salary” many of them see. Two official reference points:
| Scheme | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UKRI minimum doctoral stipend, UK | £20,780 (2025/26); £21,805 from 1 October 2026 | £22,780 and £23,805 with London weighting; EPSRC does not offer London weighting (UKRI) |
| NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, US | $37,000 per year | Plus a $16,000 cost-of-education allowance paid to the institution; three years of support within a five-year period (solicitation NSF 26-526, NSF) |
A quick calculation. The new UKRI minimum of £21,805 is about 56% of the UK median full-time salary of £39,039 (21,805 ÷ 39,039 = 0.559). In the US, three years of NSF fellowship stipends add up to $111,000 (3 × $37,000). Most US PhD students are not on this fellowship; their stipends are set by each university and vary widely.
Postdoctoral pay has no single official scale in either country; it depends on the institution, the grant and, in the UK, the university’s pay spine. Check the salary stated in each advert rather than relying on averages. If you are still choosing a programme, see where to study palynology.
How to check current offers
- Read the advert, not the average. Most university and public-sector adverts state a salary band or grade. That figure beats any estimate.
- Follow the societies. AASP – The Palynological Society runs student awards and a strong network; The Micropalaeontological Society has a palynology group. Both are listed, with other palynology societies and networks in our directory.
- Use research job portals. EURAXESS lists research posts and funded PhDs across Europe.
- Compare like with like. An industry package, a postdoc salary and a PhD stipend are not directly comparable; check tax treatment, pension and contract length.
Frequently asked questions
- How much do palynologists make?
- There is no official palynologist wage. The closest US data (BLS, May 2025) give geoscientists a median of $101,920 and postsecondary biological science teachers $84,620. Palynologists in oil and gas are counted as geoscientists, whose median in that industry was $158,590.
- Do palynologists make good money?
- It depends on the sector. Industry and government geoscience roles pay above many academic posts, according to BLS medians, while early academic careers often involve years of PhD stipends and fixed-term postdoc contracts. Pay is solid for experienced specialists, but it is a small field with few openings.
- Do oil and gas palynologists earn more?
- The official data suggest so: geoscientists in mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction had a median of $158,590 in May 2025, against $101,920 for all geoscientists. The BLS does not separate biostratigraphers, and industry hiring can depend on exploration activity.
- Is a PhD required to earn more?
- Not always. Geoscientists typically enter with a bachelor’s degree and technician roles often need no doctorate. University teaching and most research and expert-witness roles, however, usually require a PhD, and those are the routes to senior academic posts.
- Why do some websites say palynologists earn $88,530?
- That figure is the 2024 BLS median for microbiologists, which one careers site uses as a stand-in for palynologists. No official classification places palynologists in that group; geoscientists or biological scientists are closer matches.
