How forensic palynologists help solve crimes
Pollen is invisible, sticky and everywhere — which makes it superb trace evidence.
When investigators run out of fingerprints and fibres, there is one kind of evidence a suspect almost never thinks to remove: pollen. Forensic palynology uses the pollen and spores clinging to clothing, shoes, tools and vehicles to work out where they have been.
A fingerprint for places
Every habitat has a characteristic mix of pollen — its assemblage. A woodland, a roadside and a marsh each leave a different signature. Because pollen is microscopic and sticky, that signature transfers onto anything passing through, and sporopollenin makes it last.
From scene to courtroom
The analyst recovers samples from the questioned object and from control points at the scene, concentrates the grains, identifies and counts them, and compares the assemblages. If rare, telltale grains from the scene turn up on a suspect's clothing, that is hard to dismiss as coincidence.
Underused, not unproven
